It’s a rather useful resource, especially for those aspiring to enter the field.

Charlotte Cook

Attempts have been made for some time now to create a documentary-centric streaming service. Charlotte Cook is one person trying to do just that. Her experience includes time spent at Hoc Doc, where she oversaw programming. She later teamed up with A.J. Schnack and Laura Poitras to launch Field of Vision: a new documentary platform from The Intercept. The platform plans to release as many as 40 to 50 documentaries per year, covering a diverse range of topics.

Billy Corben

Billy Corben launched his film career in 2001 with the powerful documentary entitled Raw Deal: A Question of Consent. He later founded a Miami-based studio that produced dozens of great films, such as Cocaine CowboysSquare Grouper: The Godfathers of Ganja, and Dawg Fight. Corben runs a casual Twitter account, often interacting with his followers. It’s a personal account, so don’t be surprised to find talk about sports and daily life, alongside discussions about movies and the film industry.

Marshall Curry is a two-time Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker, known as the creator behind Street Fight, Racing Dreams, and many other films. Street Fight in particular a timely film to watch nowadays, as it follows the mayoral race between Sharpe James and Corry Booker, who is now a presidential hopeful. Curry writes about the ethic of documentary filmmaking as well, particularly in regards to politics and issues of social importance.

Heidi Ewing

Ewing is a producer, writer and director offering unique looks at the broader filmmaking process, as she creates her own films from start to finish. She is co-founder of the production company Loki Films. Her most famous films are The Boys of BarakaJesus Camp and Detropia. Detropia tackles the fate of Detroit, Michigan, and the fate of the postindustrial US economy. The Boys of Baraka follows a group of Baltimore boys attending school in Kenya, tackling issues of race and poverty.

Liz Garbus

Liz Garbus is a two-time Academy Award nominee and a director and producer of her own films. Her credits include Love, Marylin, Killing in the Name, Bobby Fischer Against the World, and most recently: What Happened, Miss Simone? The latter was produced as a partnership with Netflix, exploring the life and times of Nina Simone. Garbus is also a co-founder of Moxie Firecracker Films: an independent film company. Her tweets straddle the line between business and art and are quite interesting to follow.
