According to iconic singer Sting, a world without The Simpsons would be akin to living in the post-apocalyptic universe of a Cormac McCarthy novel. America–maybe even the world at large–might have never learned how to fully embrace comedy.
The Simpsons has become a huge stamp on the realm of pop culture, with much of today’s humor influenced by the many quips of the show. Many will learn something substantial simply through the chaotic nature of Homer Simpson, and how his dysfunctional family is a template for “Everything You Should Not Do In Nurturing Familial Relationships.”
Beyond its jokes and misbehaviors is a palpable heart that is universally appreciated. The Simpsons is a cultural landmark that spans a legion of fans and critics around the world, charmingly documented in The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special – In 3-D! On Ice!
In 2009, Morgan Spurlock was tasked by Fox to create a television special to showcase the achievements and influence of The Simpsons—all in a mere 45-minute running time. It is impossible to cover everything, but Spurlock did a great job at highlighting the show’s legacy.
To create his documentary, Spurlock took a deep dive into the show’s creation, interviewing production members such as creator Matt Groening, Ai Jean and Dan Castellaneta.
In under an hour, Spurlock documents far more than anyone would expect. The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special – In 3-D! On Ice! could easily be a multi-hour series and still have more to say, but what we got is a heartwarming look at a show that defies the traditions of primetime TV.
