Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey (2011) Review

The biggest reveal of Constance Mark’s Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey (2011) occurs near the middle of the film. Puppeteer Kevin Clash is going back to his hometown in Baltimore, while searching for ways to persuade his production bosses that he can win the role of Elmo in the popular children’s show, Sesame Street. Elmo, at the time, had no clear personality, and was merely a sketch still its drafting stage.

It wasn’t long before Clash realized the one element missing from the show: a character who represented love. He felt confident that Elmo could become that symbol. Kevin’s parents, George and Glady Clash, became his inspiration for the character. He described the couple as the most lovable and caring people in his life.

Viewers of all ages quickly leaned into Elmo as an instant favorite. Merchandise involving the character turned into prized possessions, and Sesame Street had found a character that would define them for years to come.

Still, Being Elmo is not entirely about the impact of the character himself, but rather a heartwarming narration of its creator, and his undying passion for puppetry. Kevin began creating puppets at a young age. While many felt his newfound hobby was childish and absurd, Kevin was undeterred. When the opportunity arose to meet his industry idol Kermit Love in New York, Kevin jumped at the chance. Kermit took Kevin on as a protégé, teaching him the ins and outs of puppetry and offering him the chance to work for Captain Kangaroo, which eventually led to his role in Sesame Street.

The success of Kevin Clash is the heartwarming story of an underdog who dared to pursue his passions. Being Elmo allows viewers to see vividly how Kevin grew within his craft, and that mastery of any skill brings with it a responsibility to pass on one’s knowledge.

Kevin rose as a director and producer for Sesame Street, with Elmo enjoying a continuous rise in popularity. at a continuous rise of popularity. When a young aspiring puppeteer called asking for an appointment to visit the set of the show, Kevin returned the favor of his mentor Kermit by taking the child under his wing. From here, Being Elmo blossoms into a story of legacy–showing that some things can only become possible through acts of generosity and trust. Everyone, like Elmo, can make a difference for the next generation, simply by serving as a symbol of love and hope.
