9 Unscripted moments in Cinema
Given the meticulous planning that goes into making a film, it’s surprising that a huge amount of scenes - many of them being as iconic as they are - were unscripted. Whether it be because of improvisation or unprecedented accidents on sets, here are 9 moments in cinema that were unscripted.
Hospital scene in The Dark Knight (2008)
The Joker walking away from a hospital he’s about to blow up is by far the most memorable scene of The Dark Knight, but it’s also one that was improvised by Heath Ledger. Director Christopher Nolan wanted to blow up an actual building for the sake of realism, so they really only had one chance to get the scene right. Originally, the Joker was simply meant to walk away as the building exploded; however, due to a malfunction on set the explosives didn’t go off right away. This led to Heath Ledger’s improvisation of the Joker’s iconic confused stare at the hospital, before it actually does blow up and he runs away. Ledger's improvisation added a new layer of silliness to the Joker, completing the image of a nihilistic maniac in clown make-up and a nurse's dress blowing up a hospital.

“Here’s Johnny!” line in The Shining(1980)
Despite director Stanley Kubrick often being cited as a perfectionist when it comes to his films, the legendary “Here’s Johnny!” line was actually improvised by Jack Nicholson on the spot. Behind the scenes footage shot moments before the scene took place displays Nicholson as a true method actor as he frantically jumps up and down, maniacly grunting “come on!” and “kill!” while swinging around an axe. From the footage alone we can see Nicholson’s dedication and capability of improvising one of the most legendary lines in cinema.

Smashed Glass in Django Unchained (2012)
During the dinner scene where Leonardo Dicaprio’s character has an outburst and smashes a glass against the table, the actor’s actual blood was drawn. DiCaprio’s dedication as an actor and to the role is brilliantly showcased here. Despite his injury, the scene kept rolling, giving it a thrilling veil of authenticity.

“I am Iron Man” line in Iron Man (2008)
According to Jeff Bridges, most of the first Iron Man was improvised, “They had no script…they had an outline. We would show up for big scenes everyday and we wouldn’t know what we were going to say.” Bridges, director John Favereau, and Robert Downey Jr. would gather before a scene and improvise it without having a script. The most unforgettable improvisation in the film happoens at the very end, where Tony Stark tells the press, “I am Iron Man”. An entirely different ending that didn’t involve Iron Man revealing his identity was planned, making Downey Jr. 's improvisation all the more bold and iconic. Marvel Studios keeping this version of the ending isn’t where the legend of this improvisation dies, however. The same line was used in Iron Man 3 and in Avengers: Endgame.

The shark in Jaws (1975)
Originally, the film was meant to show more of the shark, but its screen time was limited due to an accident - a prank - on set. Director Steven Spielberg invited George Lucas on set to show him the animatronic shark. To get a better look at the technology, Lucas stuck his head in its mouth, and Spielberg activated the shark’s mouth as a joke - breaking it. As a result, Spielberg ended up filming most of the scenes where the shark was meant to be in from the shark’s perspective, creating a hitchcockian eeriness.

Rudy Giuliani scene in Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)
Sacha Baron Cohen’s second Borat film brings us a brand new landslide of hilarious, uncomfortable, and improvised moements. One of the more awkward moments in the film traps the former mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani in a rather compromising position. Disguised as a journalist, actress Maria Bakalova - who plays Borat’s daughter - interviews Guiliani in a hotel room. After entering an adjacent bedroom, a hidden camera reveals Guiliani lying on the bed and putting his hands down his trousers for an awkward amount of time. Before anything too explicit for the cameras occurs, Borat barges into the room in only lingerie, yelling “She 15! She too old for you!”. The bewilderment slapped across Giuliani’s face and the brilliance of the whole set up shows that Baron Cohen’s comedic improvisations haven’t waned, and showcases Maria Balakova’s fresh talent.

The waxing scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)
In the famous scene where Steve Carell gets his chest waxed, we bear witness to an entirely authentic moment. To achieve authenticity to Carrell’s shrieks of pain and to the look of the scene overall, the crew had a real waxer strip his chest. Even the drawn blood is real, as the waxer claimed she had experience in waxing - which became apparently false when she didn’t apply vaseline to his nipples to prevent injury. Given that this was Carrell’s breakout role and that the crew only had one chance of filming this scene, an applaud for dedication is granted.

“Father, son and House of Gucci: line in House of Gucci (2021)
After the trailer for House of Gucci was released, the internet blew up over Lady doing the sign of the cross while chanting “Father, son, and House of Gucci” with a stern delivery. Surprisingly, Lady Gaga improvised this line herself. Lady Gaga’s improvised line being labelled iconic before the film even released is another boast to her starpower on top of her previous success with A Star Is Born and her longlasting musical career.

The most annoying scream in Dumb and Dumber (1994)
The obnoxiously annoying actions of Jim carrey and Jeff Daniel’s duo Harry and Lloyd is at the heart of Dumber and Dumber comedic brilliance. Carrey and Daniels’ ability to master the film's humour is shown in their many improvisations throughout the film, one of them being Lloyds impression of the sound of the most annoying animal. As Joe, Lloyd, and Harry continue to embark on the journey, Carrey’s Lloyd asks Joe if he'd like to hear this impression. Before Joe can even respond, Lloyd does, in fact, make an impression of a very annoying sound. Luckily, Starr and Daniels stayed in character and the three continued to carry the hilarious scene to its end.
